About the Region
The Ruapehu region is defined by the three volcanoes that stand sentinel over a landscape of tussocked desert, rivers, lakes and thermal springs.
Today the volcanoes are part of the Tongariro World Heritage Park, New Zealand’s first national park. The centerpiece is the snow-capped Mt Ruapehu alongside, Mt Ngauruhoe and Mt Tongariro.
There are many outdoor and adventure activities in the region. For mountain bikers,there are a range of rides as part of the mountains to sea trail. These rides include the Ohakune Old Coach Road, The 42nd Traverse and a range of other rides
The area is popular with hunters and, for trout fishers, the small tributary rivers provide excellent if challenging sport. And then there’s hiking. For sheer scenic incredibility, you must take the the Mt Ruapehu Guided Crater Hikoi
. This one-day hike takes you from alpine meadow to the mountain summit across a surreal landscape waterfalls and volcanic rock. If you are not one for long full day hikes there are a number of short volcanic freedom walks which take in filming sites of the Lord of the Rings Trilogy.
There is plenty of accommodation in the towns around the area - Ohakune, National Park, Whakapapa Village and Taumarunui with everything from the basic backpacker’s hostels to boutique lodges and 5 star hotels.
