Turoa and Whakapapa Ski Areas are excellent access points for the backcountry in Tongariro National Park and with the increased popularity of off-piste skiing and riding the need for knowledge of how to keep safe in these areas.
People traveling in these backcountry areas should ensure that they have:
• Knowledge of current conditions
• Be able to travel safely and avoid avalanche terrain
• All required safety equipment and experience in their use – Ice Axe, Crampons, Avalanche Rescue Beacon, Shovel, Probe etc.
• Partners to travel with.
