Frequently Asked Questions

Frequently asked questions

Why Turoa Snowsports Institute?

The Turoa Snowsports institute is one of the most affordable instructor training programs in the world. We offer the unique advantage of working weekends for the snow school once you have completed the NZSIA Level 1 course (providing you have a working holiday visa). As well as getting paid this also means you will be able to include real work experience on your resume for positions in northern hemisphere ski resorts. It will also make you eligible for rehire within our snow school. Our goal is not to pump as many people as possible through the programme, rather we focus on a "boutique" quality approach. We plan on running just one group of skiers and one group of snowboarders (maximum 6 per group) each year.

How do I obtain a working holiday visa?

Contact your local New Zealand Embassy or our working holiday and airfare partners BUNAC (UK) and IEP (NZ) who can hook you up with all the required paperwork and airfares as well as placement with Whistler Blackcomb Ski School for the northern hemisphere winter.

What is the town of Ohakune like?

Ohakune is situated in the centre of the North Island of New Zealand and is approximately 20 minutes drive from the Turoa Ski area. It is a thriving ski town with banks, supermarket, post office, ski shops, restaurants, cafes and a vibrant nightlife based around several bars and nightspots.

What is the best way to get to Ohakune from Auckland?

Check out "Getting to Ruapheu" section of the website where we have a ton of info and even some maps to show you the way.

Some tips and tricks from our past participants

In the winter Ohakune is a small ski town with a buzzing apres ski atmosphere. Check out Ohakune.info for the latest edition of the Ruapehu Bulletin (local newspaper) and for all kinds of great information on what is happening in and around town. Browsing through our Accomodation & Activities providers will also give you an idea of who, what, when and where things are going on over the winter months.

A mobile phone can come in handy. Sim cards and mobile phones can be picked up on route to Ohakune or at the electrical store in town.

Once you arrive in NZ and before you start work with us you will need to get an IRD number. It's very simple - just download the form from their website and take it to the post office in town on your arrival.

We recommend getting a NZ bank account too. Westpac and BNZ in town can set you up with everything you need in only a few minutes. Many NZ banks also have Migrant Services that can help you prepare for your banking needs in the country before your arrival.
