Avalanche Education Courses

Avalanche Awareness Courses are run in conjunction with the Mountain Safety Council (MSC) for skiers, snowboarders to help them gain an appreciation of the avalanche phenomenon and what is needed to make decisions about personal safety when travelling in avalanche terrain.

The course focuses on avoiding the need for avalanche related rescue, but also dedicates time to learning the technical skills required for rescuing a companion or small party.

2 day backcountry course

  • 3 x Avalanche Awareness Courses (1.3 Days) – Turoa $150 per person, $25 for equipment hire. All lectures are held at the Peaks in Ohakune and all Field days will be held at Turoa Ski Area.  

    • 3rd August - Lecture 7:00pm to 10:00pm, 4th August - Field Day 09:00am to 4:00pm.
    • 19th August – Lecture 7:00pm to 10pm, 20th August – Field Day 09:00am to 4:00pm.
    • 5th September – Lecture 7:00pm to 10pm, 6th September – Field Day 09:00am to 4:00pm.
       
  • 2 x Avalanche Awareness Courses (1.3 Days) – Whakapapa $150 per person, $25 for equipment hire. All lectures are held at the ??? in ??? all Field days will be held at Whakapapa Ski Area.  

    • 6th August - Lecture 7:00pm to 10:00pm, 7th August - Field Day 09:00am to 4:00pm.
    • 15th August - Lecture 7:00pm to 10:00pm, 16th August - Field Day 09:00am to 4:00pm.

4 day backcountry course

Backcountry Avalanche Courses are run in conjunction with the Mountain Safety Council (MSC) for skiers, snowboarders. The course takes place over four and is a combination of classroom study and field training, it is the most advanced recreational course in New Zealand and is designed so participants can make good decisions in the Backcountry.

  • 1 x Backcountry Avalanche Course (4 Days) – Turoa, Cost $650 per person.

    • 29th September to the 2nd of October 2011, 4 Days all based at Turoa Ski Area.
