Q. Where can I hire chains for my vehicle?
On days when chains are required there is chain hire available on the road at the point where the road restriction for chains begins. Please ensure you check for road restrictions on the snow report before heading up the mountain.
Mt Ruapehu offers chain hire at Turoa Ski Area for $30. EFTPOS is usually available but occassionally we experience technical difficulties and advise customers to always bring cash if possible. We carry chain sizes to fit most cars and some smaller vans. Please check with us in advance if you have a larger vehicle, low profile tyres or a lowered vehicle. Third party chain rentals are available at Whakapapa Ski Area for $40 per day. Signs will be posted on the road. Please note that this service is not run by Mt Ruapehu. Payment is by cash, EFTPOS or credit card but a credit card is always required for security. Personal chains can be fitted at the discretion of the third party.
Q. What are the lift operation hours?
During the winter season, lift facilities operate from 9AM-4PM daily (weather dependent).
Q. Where can I store my stuff?
It is always recommended to leave what you may not use during the day at home, securely stored out of site in your vehicle, or in one of the locker/bag check facilities located at the base area of both Whakapapa and Turoa. There are no upper mountain locker facilities and any equipment or bags not stored in bag check or a locker are left at your own risk.
Q. Do you have any childcare facilities?
Check out the Turoa Yeti Kids Centre for children aged 2 to 5. Reservations are highly recommended.

Q. What is your refund policy?
The Mt. Ruapehu warranty offers a full refund less a $10 administration fee or a credit voucher good for the remainder of this winter and the next season for the full amount. This warranty gives you the chance to come up and see what the weather and conditions are for yourself without committing yourself to the entire day. You must claim this warranty within an hour of your winter pass purchase.
Q. What are the 2016 winter season dates?
The planned operation dates are 2 July - 24 October 2016.
Q. Do you offer Family Passes?
We do offer family sightseeing rides which include 2 adults and their dependent children. These sightseeing passes are valid for scenic chairlift rides only. We do not currently offer family all day or half day lift passes.
Q. Do I have to pre-book group lessons?
No you do not need to pre-book group lessons. Simply show up early on the day you would like to visit and our friendly staff will do their best to sort you out and get you out on the hill.
Q. Do you have a half day refund on Discover or Explorer Packages?
Our Discover and Explorer Packages are heavily discounted. With these discounts, we are unable to offer half day refunds on these products.
Q. If I get rentals from Whakapapa can I return them at Turoa?
You can return your rental gear to either Whakapapa or Turoa, it does not matter which side you rented the gear from.
Q. I have vouchers from a travel agent. Where do I go to redeem my passes?
visit one of our friendly staff members in our Customer Relations Office where they will transfer your vouchers into lift and/or rental tickets for you.
Q. Where can I get cash out from on the mountain?
There are ATM facilities available on the mountain. At Whakapapa Ski Area there is an ATM available at the base area inside Lorenz's Bar & Cafe and also at Knoll Ridge Cafe. At Turoa Ski Area an ATM is available at the base area inside the Customer Relations/Rentals building.
Q. At what time do you start selling half day afternoon passes?
Afternoon half day passes are available anytime after 12:00pm.
Q. I want to do a half day in the morning, what do I need to do?
We sell full priced lift tickets in the morning. If you choose to do a half day you simply return any rental gear and then take your lift ticket back to a ticket booth or customer services before 12:30pm.
Q. Do you have student rates?
We do not offer student rates. This allows us to make passes more cost effective for everyone and not just students.
Q. What age is a youth?
We classify a youth as someone aged 5 to 18 years. Evidence of age may be required. Children aged 4 and under are considered an infant and can receive lift passes free of charge.
