Getting Here
Proudly situated in the dual World Heritage Tongariro National Park, Whakapapa is central to most North Island towns

Location & Drive Times

An easy drive from most North Island towns

Whakapapa is right in the middle of the North Island, an easy drive from Auckland, Wellington & most other North Island cities & towns. Head over for an easy short or long winter break!

Once you're in the region you'll find it well serviced by the local villages of National Park & Whakapapa Village. From Whakapapa Village you're only a short 6km drive or shuttle up a fully sealed road to the ski area - it's the easiest mountain road in NZ! Or head to Turangi or Taupo for a lakeside town experience a little further afield & serviced by our shuttles.

The closest airport to Whakapapa is Taupō's domestic airport.

After Hours Access to Bruce Road, Whakapapa

Department of Conservation (DoC), the Road Control Authority

We, DoC, would appreciate more consideration for the dangers with arriving late at night up the Bruce Rd including what appears to be a lack of preparedness for the conditions. We appreciate this does not apply to everyone however it does raise concern for DOC in managing the Bruce Rd.

The uphill barrier will not be manned after 6pm and will be closed on Friday nights when snow or bad weather is expected. Closing of the road will apply to club patrons wanting to travel up with the health and safety of travellers being a priority.

Club patrons will need to arrive at a more appropriate time during these poor weather conditions and demonstrate winter safe road practices.
A call out and recovery fee will be applied by the Roading Contractor to cover their response costs

Subaru Road Info

Subaru vehicles are particularly well suited for winter driving. The All-Wheel Drive system automatically transfers power from the wheels that slip, to the wheels that grip. If you need a reminder of why Subaru is the ideal match for the mountain, simply look at what our team drives. We're in Subarus for a reason!
