Tuesday, June 1

Kia Ora,

At Mt Ruapehu, we are committed to preventing the spread of Covid-19. Due to government regulations, we are unable to open the mountain to the public until we reach Alert Level 2. At this stage, we do not know how long it will be until this level can be reached.

Due to the number of people involved in most of our events, we would be unable to hold these at Alert Level 2. We would need to be at Alert Level 1 for these events to be successful. Given the uncertainty around Covid-19 and Alert Levels, in particular, the likelihood of reaching Alert Level 1 before the season ends - we have made the very difficult decision to cancel all events for the rest of the season.

We have made the call to cancel, as opposed to postponing, as the spring snow conditions are less ideal and not conducive to holding these events. This decision has been made with participant, spectator and staff health and safety in mind.

It is really disappointing for us that this Covid-19 outbreak has happened now, given all the work that has gone on behind the scenes to create our event calendar.

We are sad that we won’t get to see you all at these events but hope that we can get to Alert Level 2 and you can at least come riding again. We will be back next year, and hopefully Covid-19 will have less of an impact on New Zealand and the events industry as a whole.

All the best and stay safe

Monday, September 20 - Tuesday, September 21

Ruapehu College is well known among many other schools for its hosting of the North Island Secondary Schools Skiing Competition and commencing in 1997, the North Island Secondary Schools Snowboard Competition.

Starting with an idea by then staff member Alan Graham in 1980, seven schools competed in what was a successful competition.

With current staff continuing the co-ordination of the event it has grown to the stage where well over 100 schools participate. It is the largest skiing event in the Southern Hemisphere and probably the biggest single competition organised by one college.

The event is spread across both ski areas, with ski racing taking place at Whakapapa on Monday and slopestyle being held at Tūroa on Tuesday, making for an exciting two days for competitors.
