FAQs

  • Q. What are the 2017 winter season dates?

The planned opening dates are 3 June for Happy Valley, 10 June for Whakapapa lower mountain, 1 July for Turoa and Whakapapa upper mountain. Projected winter season closing date is 23 October for both sides.

  • Q. Can I bring my pets up the mountain?

No, pets are not permitted in National Parks or dog prohibited areas unless express written approval is granted. Our conservation land is vitally important for the survival of endangered species. Many of our native birds need as much protection as we can provide as even the most obedient, domesticated dogs and cats can reveal their expert predator instincts in the wild. A dog is capable of sniffing out and killing a kiwi with ease and uncontrolled dogs can easily kill remaining kiwi populations. Controlling dog access also protects and respects other people’s right to use and enjoy public conservation land.

  • Q. Where can I store my stuff?

We have paid bag check or locker facilities at the base area of Whakapapa and Turoa. It is always recommended to leave what you may not use during the day at home, securely stored out of site in your vehicle, or in one of the locker/bag check facilities. There are no upper mountain locker facilities and any equipment or bags not stored in bag check or a locker are left at your own risk.

  • Q. Where can I hire chains for my vehicle?

On days when chains are required on the Ohakune Mountain Road up to Turoa there is chain hire available from the Mt Ruapehu office on Goldfinch Street in Ohakune for $40. Please ensure you check for road restrictions on the snow report before heading up the mountain.

You will need to bring your car's registration and tyre size with you to the office when you come to rent chains. We carry a good supply of chain sizes to fit most cars and some smaller vans but, when we don't have the correct size available, we encourage guests to take one of our shuttles. Note that cars with low profile tyres or lowered vehicles are not suitable for having chains fitted.

There is no chain hire available at Whakapapa Ski Area

  • Q. What are the lift operation hours?

During the winter season, lift facilities operate from 9AM-4PM daily (weather dependent).

  • Q. What is the weather going to do today/this week/next month?

Check out our weather forecast page and daily snow reports for our team’s perspective on today and five days ahead. Anything beyond that is impossible to predict in our changeable alpine environment.

  • Q. Do you have any childcare facilities?

While we don't have an on-mountain childcare centre, we do offer children's snowsports options at Turoa for ages 3-12, which allow parents time to enjoy a bit of "me time" on the slopes while their children meet new friends and learn to ski/board. See the Turoa Snowsports Yeti Den page.

  • Q. What is your refund policy?

The Mt. Ruapehu warranty offers a full refund less a $10 administration fee or a credit voucher good for the remainder of this winter and the next season for the full amount. This warranty gives you the chance to come up and see what the weather and conditions are for yourself without committing yourself to the entire day. You must claim this warranty within an hour of your winter pass purchase.
